The Nigerian Senate resolved today that kidnapping be re‑classified as a terrorist offence — under amended terms of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act — and called for the death penalty for anyone convicted of kidnapping.
Under the new proposal, any person found guilty of kidnapping would face the maximum penalty, in an effort to curb the recent surge in abductions, bandit raids and ransom‑related violence across Nigeria.
The move comes amid mounting pressure from citizens over the unrelenting insecurity, including fresh kidnappings in several states.
