Two members of the National Guard have been critically wounded after a gunman opened fire near the White House in Washington, D.C. The shooting — described by officials as a “targeted attack” — occurred around 2:15 pm local time as the guardsmen carried out a high-visibility patrol near the Farragut West metro station. 

Local police swiftly cordoned off the area, and the suspect was subdued and arrested by fellow Guard members on the scene. 

The White House and nearby government buildings were placed on lockdown immediately following the incident. 

Authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), are leading the investigation — but motive remains unclear.
