100 million free school meals given to London’s children
A scheme set up by Sadiq Khan has now delivered 100 million free lunches to all state primary-school children across London since its launch in 2023. The scheme provides free meals to pupils in Years 3–6 (while younger children already receive meals under a national programme). Average take-up has been about 435 lunches per child — saving families up to £500 per child per year.
Speaking at a celebratory visit to Shoreditch Park Primary School (Hackney), Sadiq said the meals help children stay nourished, focused and ready to learn — while also easing financial pressure on families.
Chef and campaigner Jamie Oliver praised the milestone, saying that the benefits go beyond food — improved attendance, better concentration, and long-term health and economic gains for recipients.
The scheme, initially funded via business rates and intended as a short-term measure, has now been extended — with the Mayor pledging to keep funding free meals for the duration of his term.
