Holborn blaze: Underground fire triggers mass evacuation and chaos on central London streets
A major fire erupted this morning under Holborn, central London, forcing dozens of firefighters to rush to the scene.
Emergency crews dispatched ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters after a fire broke out in an underground utilities tunnel on Theobalds Road at the junction with Southampton Row. Thick smoke poured from manholes, visibility dropped and roads nearby — including parts of Southampton Row and Bloomsbury Square — were cordoned off.
Nearby office buildings were evacuated and traffic ground to a halt as buses were diverted and routes closed. Witnesses described seeing smoke billowing out of the street and flames suspected to involve underground electrical cables.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far; firefighters confirmed the blaze is under control. Authorities say an investigation has begun to determine the cause of the fire.
