Hi everyone 👋,
If you’ve just arrived in London and are trying to sort out your basics, this one will help you. A lot of us struggled with how to connect with GP in the UK when we first landed, so here’s a straightforward breakdown based on what actually works for Nigerians settling in London 🏙️.

1. Start by Searching for a GP Near Your Postcode 📍

The NHS website has a tool where you simply type your postcode and it shows all the surgeries around you.
Places like Peckham, Woolwich, Lewisham, Stratford, Croydon and Tottenham can be a bit competitive, so don’t panic if one or two surgeries are full — just move to the next one.

2. Check If They’re Taking New Patients ✅

Every GP profile tells you if they are “Accepting new patients”.
Save yourself stress — pick one with a green indicator.

3. Register Using the GMS1 Form 📝

This is the easiest part.
You can register:

online 💻

by walking in 🚶‍♂️

or by picking up a form from reception 🏢

What you’ll normally fill in:

Name, date of birth 🧾

UK address (temporary is fine) 🏠

Phone/email 📱

What you don’t need ❌:

Passport

BRP

Proof of address

Honestly, the NHS doesn’t block you because of documents. Many of us registered while still waiting for BRP collection.

4. Your Address Can Be Temporary 🏡

No permanent flat yet? No wahala.
The NHS allows:

A friend’s address 👥

Hostel address 🏨

Short-let/Airbnb 🛏️

Shared house you’re staying in 🏘️

As long as you can receive a letter there, you’re good ✉️.

5. Expect a New Patient Check 🩺

Some surgeries will call you in for a quick check-up.
Nothing major — just blood pressure, history and a chat to put your record in the system.

6. You Can Start Using Their Services Immediately 🚀

Once you’re registered, you can:

Book appointments (telephone or in-person) 📞

Request repeat medication 💊

Call NHS 111 for advice ☎️

Use their apps for online access 📲

If you’ve been wondering how to connect with GP in the UK, the real trick is simply registering early ⏰. London gets busy, so the sooner you start the process, the easier everything else becomes.

Hope this helps someone today 🌟. If anyone has tips about registering in specific parts of London, please drop your experience below 💬.
