Senate urges Tinubu to allow legal gun-ownership by “responsible Nigerians” amid worsening insecurity
Members of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have called on the federal government to review the country’s firearms laws, arguing that law-abiding citizens should be allowed to own guns for self-defence in light of rising attacks on communities, schools and worship centres.
The motion, titled “Urgent need to address escalating insecurity in Kwara, Kebbi and Niger States,” was sponsored by Lola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South). Senators highlighted frightening incidents — including a recent church attack where two people were killed and 38 worshippers abducted — as evidence that current security measures are failing.
While commending Bola Tinubu for steps taken to address insecurity, the Senate urged that citizens be empowered to defend themselves, stressing that other nations allow responsible civilians to legally own firearms for protection.
Communities have also been urged to remain vigilant, and to support security agencies by resisting internal collaborators and helping to safeguard lives and property.
