Tinubu tells herders to abandon open grazing, embrace ranching and surrender illegal weapons
President Bola Tinubu has called on all herder associations in Nigeria to end open grazing, give up illegal weapons and adopt ranching — citing the move as key to restoring national security and harmony.
He emphasised that his administration has established a dedicated ministry — Federal Ministry of Livestock Development — to coordinate the transition toward modern livestock farming through ranch-based systems.
In his statement, Tinubu noted that recent waves of kidnappings, bandit attacks and fatal herder–farmer clashes underscore the urgency of this shift.
He also reiterated sweeping security measures: increased recruitment into police and army ranks and a directive for illegal arms to be surrendered — part of an overall plan to clamp down on violence and restore order across the nation.
