”Nigeria not ready for citizens to bear arms,” says retired General Njoku
Retired Major‑General Elias Njoku has cautioned against proposals to allow private individuals in Nigeria to carry firearms for self‑defence. He argued the country remains unprepared for such a move, noting the widespread proliferation of small arms and light weapons as a grave risk.
According to Njoku, even armed private security practitioners are currently barred from carrying guns — underscoring the potential dangers if firearm access is extended to ordinary citizens. He added that before any change is considered, Nigeria must strengthen regulation, integrate training standards, and improve coordination among security agencies.
For now, the official line is firm: no private individual should be permitted to bear arms, despite the rising insecurity.
