Southern governors and monarchs renew demand for State Police amid insecurity concerns
Leaders from southern Nigeria — including state governors and traditional rulers — have once again called for the creation of State Police, arguing that a community-based, decentralised security system is necessary to effectively protect lives and property across the region.
At a recent meeting held in Ogun State, they pledged to strengthen regional cooperation on security, launching plans for a Zonal Security Fund and improved intelligence-sharing between states.
Their joint communiqué emphasised that traditional institutions play a critical role in early-warning and grassroots security, and urged states to integrate local leaders into security councils to reflect community realities.
They also committed to backing reforms designed to decentralise policing, improve surveillance, support community-based security outfits and streamline protection across Southern Nigeria.
