UK warns Nigerians against visa fraud — threatens up to 10‑year travel bans
The British High Commission in Nigeria has issued a firm warning to Nigerians involved in visa fraud: anyone caught could face a travel ban of up to ten years. This alert comes as part of a freshly launched joint campaign with Canada and Australia, under the banner #FightingVisaFraud — a coordinated effort to curb rising abuse of immigration systems.
The commission warned that scams often involve intermediaries promising guaranteed visas, quick approvals, job placements abroad or other shortcuts — schemes that leave hopeful migrants out of pocket, with no visa, and facing potential exploitation. Victims reportedly lose significant amounts of money while fraudsters vanish.
Officials emphasised that only applications submitted through official channels, such as authorised visa‑application websites of the UK, Canada or Australia, are legitimate. Nigerians were urged to shun unauthorised agents, avoid upfront payments for “guaranteed” visas, and report suspicious offers.
Failure to heed the warning could cost individuals dearly — from being permanently blacklisted from travel to facing criminal prosecution, financial loss, and the risk of falling into trafficking or other exploitative schemes. For anyone considering travelling, the message is clear: comply with official procedures or face the consequences.
